Liriano rehab stint not working out as planned

According to an article on ESPN's website, Francisco Liriano's trip to rehab has not improved the condition in his throwing arm. The article additionally mentions Liriano's frustration, which would be expected, and his position for surgury. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune it is unclear if Liriano will need Tommy John surgery. Here's the link to the ESPN article:ESPN

I am definately hoping this is not the case. I wish him only good luck, not the type of luck Kerry Wood or Mark Prior have had.

Mets-Cards: Game 7

Tonight is the final night of the NLCS. I think this is the longest series in baseball history, considering the series has gone all seven games in addition to two rain postponements. I really have no preference to what team wins this series, mainly because whichever team wins will ultimately lose to Detroit in the World Series. Yeah, so I guess I am already making predictions here, I'll go one step further: No matter who wins the NLCS, the Tigers will win the World Series 4-1. Haha, I figure it's okay to make predicts now, I mean, it's not like ESPN predicted anything right for baseball this year, did they.

Billy Mills Keynote Address

This video includes several features from the Billy Mills keynote address from the 2006 Native American Media Symposium held at SDSU. The music in the background was sung by a Native American college student in dedication to the event and his culture. Several people attended Billy's address, which was pretty inspiring.

Sad day for baseball

Cory Lidle, a 34 year old pitcher for the New York Yankees died today when his private plane crashed into a 50-story condo in Manhattan. Officials say there was a passenger with Lidle, who is currently unidentified. Over 170 firetrucks fled to the seen with emergency officials, a reaction not too unexpected after the attacks of 9/11. Serveral members within the Yankee organization and Major League Baseball spoke on the event and offered their condolences to Lidle's family. It is a sad day for all of baseball. Native American Symposium

I attended the Native American Media Symposium on Friday Oct. 6 to hear Olympic Champion Billy Mills keynote address. Mills spoke of his Olympic gold metal in the 10,000 M race and essentially what he took from sports: "life values through competing." He also stated that sports, especially the Olympics bring "global unity through diversity."
Mills' went on from there to explain the importance of Native American journalism. He pointed to the young Native American journalist stating, "Native American Journalism is needed. You are the heart and sole. You are the only ones speaking for us, and the world is beginning to listen." What I believe Mills' was referring to is that Native American journalists have a lot to offer the world. And what they have to offer is more than what some mainstream media outlets perceive and stereotype native americans as.
Mills' obviously wishes for more of a positive image of the Native American people and their culture in the future. He believes that Native American journalists have the potential to promote a more promising image for their people.
Ultimately, Mills uses his Olympic accomplishment as a metaphor: that any Native American, if they have their mind set on accomplishing something special and promising, can do anything.
I especially enjoyed the story he told about him and his daughter standing in line and hearing the conversation on "what happened to the indian guy who won the 10,000 M race in '64?", and how he was hurt by how people perceived Native Americans. I think it well-represents how people stereotype others, often without even thinking about it.

Oh...and...

Did I forget to mention that Joe Mauer won the Amercian League batting title, edging out Jeter and Cano of the Yankees. Mauer's title marks the first time a catcher won the batting title in the American League and the only time in Major League (Baseball) history that a catcher led both leagues in batting.

Twins win division title!

Words can't even begin to describe what happened today for the Minnesota Twins baseball organization. In order to win the AL central crown, the Twins needed a win against a tough White Sox team and a complementing Tigers loss to a lowly Royals squad. Even after the Twins pulled ahead of the Sox 3-1 after Tori Hunter's two-run shot, the Tigers already seemed destined for the Central title, up 6-0 on the Royals. But leave it to those Royals, those pesky Royals, who took 2 of 3 from the Twins a few days back to pull out some last minute heroics. Heroics that made even the die-hard Twins fan a Royals fan, atleast for the moment being. The Royals rallied from a 7-3 deficit to tie the game at 7-all, and after a brief lead change (8-7 Royals), Detroit tied the game with a homerun and the game entered extra innings. Eventually the Royals pulled of a 10-8 victory of the Tigers. All I can say is: Swept by the Royals...haha. Plenty of more information can be found online at mlb.com
